OK, here's another newbee with Vista. We have a home wireless network with a
laptop and desktop both on XP. I've successfully added my new laptop with
Vista to the network, but cannot connect to the printer that runs through the
XP desktop.
I've scanned some of the discussions, but nothing has worked so far.
I've checked all the firewall settings, have file, printer and public
sharing set on the Vista laptop. The desktop PC is hardwired to the wireless
router. The other XP laptop still prints through the system as normal.

Any ideas?? Oh, it's a Dell AIO 922 printer that has an XP based driver.
Ihaven't been able to find a Vista driver for that printer. Do I just need a
newer printer??

Thanks

Many Vista printer issues may be fixed by adding local printer first and
then mapping it as network printer. Or this link may help.

Vista Print IssuesMay 27, 2007 ... Solved: Vista print Error 0x00000866.
Resolution: 1. Add a Local Printer and then create a new port pointing to
the shared printer. ...

I have tried designating the local port with the network location of the
printer. Now I get an error that says I have something enabled that blocks
running NT 4.0 drivers.
Anyone have any idea where I can change that?
Thanks!

Watching with interest. Have same problem probably compounded by 32bit Vista
System and 64bit WP system. Not impressed with Vista because of time spent
with this problem. Hope Robert L solves problem for us. Arturo8

I am disappointed these problems have not been fixed yet. It is now Feb 12
09 and I too am having this problem. I feel like Microsoft has put their
product out there for US to fix the problems. This stuff should have been
worked out before it hit the box stores and became the only OS allowed to be
installed on these systems. (argh). Now that I've got that out of my
system....
I have a Toshiba Qosmio G55 Q804 - Vista 64 bit. My "server" is running XP
with a HP2200dtn attached to it. I have sent back the last computer because
of the Vista incompatibility....but really need one - so got another. Here I
am still unable to connect to the printers. I have gone up to the HP site
and downloaded the correct drivers. I tried the install by creating a new
port, updated my XP to SP3 (against my better judgement), have contacted HP -
of course my printer is out of warranty - so that costs money and I haven't
signed up for that option yet.

I'm hoping for a fix here. Feeling like I'm alone in some hot, barren waste
land....please help.

I have had no further luck either. I tried connecting to a 'local port' with
the pathname for the attached printer. NO GO there either. All the
recommendations in the Vista help haven't helped either.

We're in the same waste land!

OK. We gave up today. Got a new printer that's Vista compatible and
wireless/wired network ready. So it's plugged into the wireless router
rather than shared through the XP desktop. Now both XP machines and the new
Vista machine all work with the printer.
