Connecting two notebooks

I have a notebook running W98 controlling an application
(a telescope). I want to operate this from about 150
meters distance and am considering using another notebook
(XP-pro) and "Remote Desktop" facility to effectively
take "control" of the local notebook and clone its
operation remotely. If I install a D-Link 802.11g product
(DWL-G650) in each notebook, will I also need a WAN
Router or will the two PCMCIA cards talk directly with
each other? Also, will Win98 on the local notebook
support Remote Desktop operation?

You should be able to run in adhoc mode and talk directly laptop to laptop wirelessly. The big
problem may be interference (2.4 Ghz cordless phones (I guess 802.11b runs at 2.4 Ghz?) ,etc),
building materials, etc. Is the link line-of-sight or do you have walls, metal objects like doors
between you and the remote PC? Yes the Windows 98 laptop can run Remote Desktop in client mode to
access/control an XP Pro Remote Desktop...

I am not sure of the range of 802.11g, but you may be pushing it at 150 meters (that is a long way).
See my earlier comments about interference, etc. You also might try a directional antenna if the
card(s) will accept an external antenna. Anyway to run a 100 Mbps wired link?

I meant to say...(I guess 802.11g runs at 2.4 Ghz?)...note the correct to 802.11g versus 802.11b
which does run at 2.4 Ghz...
