I am trying to connect to a windows xp machine from my windows 2000 machine
and the error message comes back that it cannot find network path. I can see
the computer under computers near me but it fails to connect. Permission is
set on the machine to let others share the printer and c drive.

Did you run the XP network setup wizard on both machines, did you make sure
all firewalls including the XP were turned off during the setup wizard?

During the wizard, you are asked how this computer connects to the Internet,
an incorrect response can cause the issue you describe. Usually, "network
hub" is incorrect and usually choosing the "Gateway" response is correct.

Failing that, have you checked your firewall logs to see if it is blocking
anything when you are trying to connect, have you checked to make sure no
other security applications you might have installed, antivirus for example,
might be blocking.

If none of the above helps, please take this question to the
windowsxp.network_web newsgroup and be sure to give them information about
what you've done with regard to the suggestions I've made above.
