I am trying to connect to my computer from work and when I
travel. I have windows XP home edition, road runner, and a
d link router. I have downloaded remotely anywhere onto
the XP computer. I have unchecked the boxes to let
computer allow remote and I have opended up ports on my
router. I can not reach the computer. I have done these
things but I am a newbie and I am not positive what I
might have done wrong or am I just not typing in the
correct address. Can anyone help? I have read dlink and
windows xp help until I am brain fried.
Thanks,

To get this working, it looks like you need to get two things right:

1) the port forwarding through the router, and
2) the IP address of the router at a given moment in time.

Looking here:
http://www.remotelyanywhere.com/template.asp?page=faq#technical-01

it appears that the default port for RA is 2000. So, you need to have
forwarded port 2000 to the XP home machine through the router.

If you are in doubt about that one, let us know what you've done, and maybe
we can second guess you?

So--on to step 2, knowing the correct IP address to put in from the remote
side.

This needs to be the public, or wan, IP address of the router.
One way to find this is, sitting at the XP Home machine, go to:
http://whatismyipaddress.com
(I don't like this site much--be very careful not to click on the ads,
except the red x to close the one which obscures the ip address) but it does
work.

So, remotely, the IP address displayed by that web site is the one you
should be putting in.

If, in fact, the IP address your router gets changes dynamically, you may
need the answer to the next question at the URL I gave above about the port
in the firewall--just read on at that location.

See if that gets you going--it can be very helpful to be able to test from a
"nearby" remote location, if you can manage that.
