I have a problem with Outlook 2000 - I can't get it to open at all.

I don't understand much at all about computers except the Word package.

When I click on MS Outlook a window comes up saying:

The server containing the Global Address List is no longer available. You
can reconnect to a different server by restarting Outlook or retry the
operation when the server is reachable.

When I click on OK the next window says: The action could not be completed.

I click on OK again and the next window gives two lines to be filled in:

1.. Microsoft Exchange Server
2.. Mailbox
Please can some one tell me who or what are the answers I should be typing
in to the boxes.

My thanks to any one who tell me.

Did Outlook ever work, are you using Outlook in an office with an Exchange
server or do you connect to an ISP to get your email

There could be several possiblities why you are experiencing these symptoms. Are you trying to
connect to an Exchange Server? If so, you may need to create a new profile and set up your exchange
account in the new profile.

If you are not connecting to an Exchange Server, but just trying to access POP3 or IMAP accounts,
then you will need to remove your current profile and create a new profile and add your accounts to
properly access your email.

Before removing your old profile and creating a new profile, make sure you have all your account
information: username, account name, and password.

Please read all articles to understand your next steps.
- Add new profile
- Add accounts to new profile (Exchange or POP3)
-If POP3...add a Personal Folders file
-Test to see if you can access mail (if you have an exchange account and still cannot access mail, talk
to your Exchange Admin)

Dear Robert and William

Thank you both for replying. I have Office 2000 Premium, Windows 2000 and
have Outlook Express. I have always been used to Outlook with the Journal.
As I had Office 97 I put that on my computer as well. I use Outlook Express
for my emails and Tesco is my ISP.

I am afraid I don't have enough knowledge to understand what you are trying
to tell me.

And the answer to your question is yes - it used to work fine on my old
machine. I used Office 97.

All I know now is that when I open up my computer Outlook tries to start but
can't and I have to exit out of it.

Since my first post I have been trying to find the answer with others
including Microsoft who said it was for my ISP to tell me what my Exchange
Server was and to confirm my email address. I entered these but the
computer hung and I had to switch it off by unplugging it from the wall as I
couldn't even shut down. This happened several times.

I reinserted my CD and tried again. This time as I say it tries to open as
soon as everything is loaded but still comes up with the same question. I
have tried to look at Tools but I can't get in because of the first window
and then I go round in circles.

I know I am not making myself very clear but I don't know how else to
explain it.

In the meantime I will try and read what you have suggested but I don't
think it will sink in!

Thanks again - I'll keep in touch.

Best wishes

Teresa
