connecting to online programs

I am trying to connect to programs on the internet for downloading or
betting. For example programs like ares or kazaa and poker sites. Downloading
is not a problem. There always seems to be an error when connecting. Ive been
told to open ceratin ports by ladbrokes poker site (1969 to 2002 inclusive).

Does anyone know what the problem is?

p.s i have no firewalls in the computer but I am using a new LAN connection
in a block of appartments and windows has just been reinstalled.

What errors, and when? Where could you be opening ports if you aren't behind
a firewall/gateway or using a software firewall?

So you're not behind any firewall at all - or do you mean you're not using
the XP firewall but are using a hardware appliance? You must absolutely use
*something* or you are really asking for trouble in a hearbeat.
