I am attempting to access my Win95 desktop via an Ethernet crossover cable from
my WinXP Home laptop. I'll list what I can think of that I've done, and
hopefully someone will be able to point out why I've been unsuccessful. (I've
tried searching the Web and Usenet but, frankly, haven't been satisfied with the
quality of information.)

I have network cards on both systems, and both appear to be installed and
working properly.
Each system has the same workgroup name and a different computer name.
I have Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks, and TCP/IP installed on both computers.
I have file sharing enabled on the Win95 system. (I don't need nor want file
sharing enabled on the WinXP system unless absolutely necessary.)
I am using a crossover cable.

I know everyone has their own opinion about how best to transfer files between
systems, but this is my current project.

If anyone needs anymore information, please let me know. Thanks.

You're off to a good start, Larry. All that should be needed now is
to assign IP addresses to both computers and to make sure that Windows
XP's Internet Connection Firewall is disabled:

On Windows 95:

1. Go to Control Panel | Network.
2. Double click "TCP/IP->network adapter".
3. Click "Specify an IP address".
4. Enter IP address 192.168.0.2.
5. Enter subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

On Windows XP:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Double click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click "Use the following IP address".
6. Enter IP address 192.168.0.1.
7. Enter subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
8. Click OK.
9. Click Advanced.
10. Un-check "Protect my computer and network by limiting or
preventing access to this computer from the Internet".
