Connecting Speakers

Hi
I have a ViewSonic VG710b monitor which has inbuilt speakers. I tried to
connect the two via a cable yet I could not produce any sound. I went to the
speaker thing in the control panel and the tab which usually shows
configurations for the connected speakers were not available for me to fiddle
with.
Any suggestions? Help appreciated!
Thanks

Did you connect a cable from the monitor to your computer?

That of course would be both the VGA or Digital video signal cable AND the
miniphono plug audio cable from sound card to monitor.

Umm...I said that I attached them by cable?

Yes, thank you. That's exactly what I meant. I guess I was assuming that
the video cable connection was so basic that I didn't count it! I just
ran across a monitor like that at a client's the other day. She told me
she didn't understand why there was no sound and when I looked at the
back of the monitor there was no audio cable going into the computer.

Thanks again for your good clarification of my fuzzy post. :-)

ok >.< So got any ideas? Because I know the cable is plugged in.

No, because we don't have much information from you. Using the right
cable? Got the sound turned up in the speaker applet? Nothing muted?
Got the audio cable plugged into the right hole? Looked at what sound
device is being used from the Sounds applet?

Refer to the manual you got with the monitor and contact their tech
support if you are doing everything according to that manual and still
don't have sound.

lol! Well. Here goes. I have the right cable, in fact i'm using the cable
given to us, which came with the monitor. The sound is turned up, nothing is
muted, actually I don't get the option to mute it on the computer on the
bottom right in that task bar thing. It's plugged in the right hole, i
checked 5 times. And there doesn't seem to be a sound device detected. If
that's what you mean?

If no sound device is detected in Windows, then you won't have sound.
Before you continue with the following suggestions, if you have a
separate PCI sound card and one built into the motherboard, make sure
you are not plugging the audio cable into the wrong device. I know you
said you were plugging the cable into the right connector but it never
hurts to double-check.

If your sound card is built onto the motherboard, make sure it isn't
disabled in the BIOS. Then reinstall the drivers for your sound card.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor
http://www.aumha.org/free.htm - Aida32 (hosted on Jim Eshelman's site)

If reinstalling the drivers doesn't fix the issue, then swap out the
sound card for a known-working one. If the current sound chip is on the
motherboard, disable it in the BIOS first.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA) or have
the tech come on-site.
