Connecting Only Two Machines

I want to connect two Win2K machines together using a crossover cable.

Must I set up networking using a static IP address or does Win2K Pro
SP4 have built in DHCP?

Windows 2000 Pro does not have a DHCP server, you'll need to use static
addressing to be sure it will work correctly.

Not as much fun as you will have trying to get it to work properly.

It is interesting to note that the link above contains references to
"server" and to "reskit".

Don't believe everything you read on Microsoft's website. Millions of
unsuspecting people have wasted astronomical amounts of time and
effort trying to get something to work based on instructions from
Microsoft, especially when the object was part of "server" and
"reskit".

I can tell you from direct experience that you cannot get two Win2K
Pro machines to connect with a crossover cable alone unless you hard
code the IP address. Only when we put in hard coded IP addresses could
we connect. But then we did not have any "reskit" belonging to any
"server" either.

I thought that too (for Win2K), but actually MS APIPA seems to work
with crossover cable just fine. For Win2K3, WinXP, Win2K and Win98.

You say "seems to work". Does that mean you actually got it to work?
With default OS settings.

What "default OS settings"?

I will never know why we had to hard code the IP addresses - the
people I was helping get connected bought a router the next day.
