Hi Guys

Just a thought came to mind. Is it possible to connect my desktop computer
to my laptop? As in instead of using my monitor for the desktop computer,
using the laptop screen as a monitor for the desktop computer.

So bascially using a the laptop screen as a monitor....

Although you cannot do that in any practical manner...

If the machines both have XP pro and are networked...
just use the remote desktop feature!

That doesnt do that.

So Mr Speed. What is the point of just saying "no" and not explaining
your reaosn why. This is a public forum where people can benefit from
each others' experience and knowledge.

I think I tried that software kvm solution.
He doens't need all of that. Just VNC.

To use VNC for what he wnts, he could connect his laptop to the desktop
and from the desktop, VNC To the laptop.
Or better, use "Remote Desktop" - functionality is built into windows.
VNC isn't as seamless.

note-
one itneresting differnece between VNC and "windows remote desktop" is
that with 'remote desktop', you can't use the remote computer locally
at the same time. And locally, it logs out (e.g.?) to the welcome
screen.
With VNC you can fight with the other guy over who controls the mouse..
You both see and control the screen

Neither does that.

I used synergy once. It's like a KVM minus the V.

It could do it too. You use your keyboard and mouse on the desktop,
move the cursor off the desktop screen "onto" the laptop screen and
you're controlling the laptop.

And perhaps there are even better methods than those two anyway. A way
that is more direct.

Making your posts disappear is very selfish. I hope it wasn't
intentional. This is a public forum. It is like asking for help and
making sure that nobody else benefits from it. Really disgusting if it
was intentional.

It was intentional. He has an X-no-archive header. If I ever
notice such a header I give no help.

You quite sure you aint one of those rocket scientist ****wit children ?

Nothing like the original question.

Duh.

It could do it too.

Nope, nothing like the original question.

Duh, pity its nothing like the original question.

Still nothing like the original question.

FWIW, Google groups seems to have ignored it.

It will disappear from their long term archive storage. Maybe 2 or
3 weeks or so. Whatever their policy is. Use of that anti-social
header tends to make searching archives useless.

The first reply usually quotes the text in full. So not THAT futile.

The point is that the question has been asked and discussed
ad nauseum. If the OP can't bother to search for this
information, why should a reply put forth the effort to
repeat it yet again?

He could have wrote "search Google", but the no answer was
pretty much to the point, a reasonable summary since it
isn't a reasonable thing to do (what would be necessary
towards that end of using the laptop display).

He didn't give a "no answer". He gave an answer implying "no".

His answer factually disagreed with what others had suggested, but gave
no argument against them.

I couldn't care less about this selfish OP who doesn't archive his
posts . Many people search usenet - as oppose to the web, and
information changes as new technology arrives. Synergy is quite new.
And a few clear answers from different people can help them filter
useful and relevant information. So hopefully they can find the answer
quicker

I'm wondering actually, how people know of Synergy? I found it through
stumbleupon, some months ago.

Wrong again. I JUST said that paulmd listed isnt what the OP asked about.

Dont need to, anyone with a clue can compare what
paulmd offered to what the OP asked about and realise
that what he offered isnt what the OP asked about.

And an X-No-Archive: Yes has very little effect with an original post because
at least one of the replys will normally quote the entire original post.

Wrong again. And its nothing like what the OP asked about anyway.

So can comments like mine which point out that neither
of what paulmd offered are what the OP asked about.
So hopefully they can find the answer quicker

And dont have to follow those links that paulmd provided
if they do want to do what the OP wants to do.
I'm wondering actually, how people know of Synergy?

Impossible question to answer.

I certainly do and its completely trivial to see that I have suggested
a number of people use it, particularly in addition to a KVM etc.
I found it through stumbleupon, some months ago.

I forget when I first came across it, likely in usenet, long before that.

Not if it was properly snipped.

Which hardly anyone is actually stupid enough to
bother with with a post as succinct as the original.
At any rate darren@gunter7 has met my plonk file.

Bet that will have him slashing his wrists as soon as he reads your post.

Not my concern. The plonk avoids my accidentally giving him any
help. It's for my benefit, not his. This machine is better at
remembering evildoers than I am.

It will still do that even if you don't announce the plonk.
