connecting my vista computer to a xp client comes up with error

"a device attached to the system is not functioning" always shows when i try
to connect to the hard drive across a network from a vista computer.

so when i trype run: \\computername\c$ which always works from xp to xp it
will not work from vista computer

the vista is ultimate x64 bit and is workgrouped. netwrok discovery etc is
on. the xp computers can however access my hard drive.

From a command window, run "net share", and see if "C$" is in the list. I'll
bet not.
 
no the client is definitely accessible as i have connected to it from other
computers. its not a problem with this one client but a problem with all the
clients that i try and connect to on the network.

i forgot to mention that i am workgrouped wheras the other xp computers are
all on the same domain.

again though, this was not a problem when i had xp on the workgroup!

You say "i am workgrouped" = the Vista computer is not a member of the domain?
Are all XP computers in the same domain? Any particular reason for not joining
the Vista computer to the domain?

What exactly are you trying to connect to, from the Vista computer? A server,
running WHAT operating system? Different servers, all give the same problem?
Do you ONLY try connecting to "C$"? Is that how your servers are setup?

Is the domain using NetBT Broadcast name resolution, or an internal DNS server?
Or God forbid WINS?

Please do some reading, so we are all on the same page here. Mostly short
articles, so please read.

Then provide some diagnostics. Look at logs from "browstat status" and
"ipconfig /all", from the Vista computer and2 XP computers, so we can diagnose
the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):
