Connecting laptop monitor to PC

I've been wondering if this is possible. Can you somehow connect a PC to a
laptop so that you can view the PC using the laptop's monitor? I have an old
PC with a huge, heavy monitor (that doesn't look too good by the way) and
would like to be able to view my PC with my new laptop's monitor instead of
using that old monitor. How can I do this? Thanks.

When someone says something is not possible, dont believe him.
I say everything is possible.

You can do this with a program called MAXIVISTA

http://www.maxivista.com/

However have in mind that video playing and 3d games and stuff with motion
will be slow.

Also you can use BOTH displays in an extended desktop. In otherwords you
will see half your desktop on one screen and the other have on the screens
laptop, giving you more space for your applications.

There is a trial on the site there, you can give it a go, and see if you
like what it does. http://www.maxivista.com/

Oh and another thing...

If all you are interested in is seeing the Desktops desktop from the laptop
(got that?) you can also install a program called VNC
or if the desktop has WINDOWS XP PRO you can use REMOTE DESKTOP

of course the 2 computers must be connected with a network. Wire or
Wireless.

in otherwords you can control and view everything from your laptops monitor,
but you will be seeing the Desktop PCs, desktop

These solutions are free.

If your desktop pc has windows PRO use remote desktop and see here for
information about how to set it up
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx

if your Desktop Comptuer is windows 98 or Windows XP home you can use this
http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/

If you are interested in these options post here and I will try to help you
or
post at this newsgroup that is dedicated in such solutions

As stated before, not possible.. MaxiVista allows for the laptop screen to
be used 'in conjunction' with a physical display, and NOT 'instead of' a
physical display..

Just to confirm this, a quote from MaxiVista FAQ..

"Can I use my laptop as the only monitor of my desktop PC?

MaxiVista allows mirroring the screen content of your other PC only after
you logged into Windows. This is why you would need a physical monitor.
Otherwise, you would have no visual access to the computer before logging in
and at boot or DOS level"

It also requires use of a 'network', so the statement made that 'no hardware
is required' lacks a little credibility..

I assume that the 'verse' is your own work.. should I congratulate you on
your poetic skills being almost on par with your research?.. can I have a
raincheck?..

My era was Hendrix, Cream, Doors, King Crimson, Beatles etc.. Dire
Straits?.. yes I have heard OF them, but can't claim to be taken with
anything they produce.. c'est la guerre, eh..

Re.. the OP question, my point was, and still is, that the laptop screen
can't replace the desktop monitor.. it can run alongside it, which is NOT
what the OP wanted..

You are not only wrong & narrow sighted, you are also persistant!

that the laptop screen can't replace the desktop monitor

With VNC it can ... and for many people they wouldn't even ever notice the
difference.

Remember there is a thing called smart displays.. these use RDP and wireless
technology monitors that show the desktop of a remote PC while you are in
another room for instance.. if they are called a "display" then the laptop
is also a "display" for the desktop using RDP or VNC.

You are limited into thinking that a display must be connected to a VGA card
and a cable. This is incorrect. A display in the future may be a holographic
projection in the space above the computer. Or it could transmit the image
directly
to the brain. Therefore we would indeed have a virtual display.
Nevertheless it would be a screen and its function would be the same, but
perhaps enhanced.

My advice.. you need to be more flexible. There are many alternative ways to
do things, and since you are in the area of computers for so long you should
know that many things people thought impossible, other people found ways to
do... with original and creative thinking.
