I am looking for STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS or a link to a web site with
such step-by-step instructions for locally connecting a laptop to
a Windows 2000 server (i.e. domain, not workgroup).

That is, suppose I come into an office where I have never used the
Windows 2000 server. However, they have set up a username and password
on the server for me.

I plug my computer into their high speed local area network. At this
point I need good step-by-step instructions on what to do to set up my
software so that I can access their server and their printer? I can get
any passwords if any are needed so that's not a problem.

I am looking for STEP-BY-STEP which are as easy as possible to follow.
I am looking for the DETAILS of what menu to click, what choice to
choose, etc. I am NOT looking for third party software, general comments
which assume I understand a lot about MS networking, etc.

Thanks.

You say that you can get "any" usernames or passwords, so I assume you have
domain admin access. Whoever granted you that much access should be able to
provide those instructions. Personally, I would not give anyone without
that knowledge that much access to my domain - it's like giving them the
keys to the building. If you don't have domain admin access, you won't be
able to just walk in and join your laptop to the network - you would need to
let the admin do it.

No one came up with an answer (I also posted in the Windows XP
group and no one came up with an answer there either); however,
I finally found it by googling for

DHCP connection windows 2000

Knowing to use DHCP in the search phrase turned out to be
the important ingredient to locating this.
