connecting laptop and pc

hi,
i have got a pc and laptop i want to connect them together to share
documents, pictures, files, etc. i aslo want to be able to play games, like
unreal, etc.
would i be able to connect both the pc and laptop, just with a single phone
cable? is a laplink a good idea? (Usb) would i have to create a LAN?

If your laptop already comes with a build-in LAN card, a LAN is the
cheapest way to do that. You only need another card for the PC (most
newer machines also have LAN capability from the start) and a cable to
connect both machines. Then run the Network Setup Wizard on both
computers to set up the LAN.
 
Along with the Network Interface Card (NIC), you must buy a CAT5
Crossover cable to directly connect the two computers. For more info go
