Four drives go on the Southbridge controlled IDE interfaces.

One drive goes on the Promise 20378 controller. The 20378 doesn't
do ATAPI, so you stick a hard drive on there.

In the BIOS, set the 20378 Operate Mode to [IDE]. That will
allow the single IDE drive connected to it to work.

Start your system install, with one CD and hard drive connected
to the Southbridge (Pri IDE or Sec IDE). Install the OS on the
hard drive. Install the Promise "ATA" driver, as it is the non-RAID
driver. Shut down and connect the second hard drive to the
Promise controller. When you boot, look in disk management and
the second drive should be there, controlled by the Promise
driver.

Installing only one hard drive, to get started, is to make sure
the OS is only installed on that disk. The drive connected to the
Promise is used for your data drive. (The Promise connector
is labelled PRI_RAID according to the manual.) If you wish to
reverse that order (OS on Promise, data drive on Southbridge),
then press F6 during the install, and install the Promise ATA
driver early in the install process, with the driver on a
floppy disk.

HTH,
Paul
