Connecting device to USB hub causes reboot

I'm having a problem whereby if I plug anything into my 4-port USB hub
the PC spontaneously reboots.

A little background:

I'm running Win2K SP4. I can plug devices into the root USB ports, it
is only when devices are connected to the hub that the PC reboots.

The 4-port hub in question was working just fine up to now. I've used
it for months, usually with a compact-flash reader. When I first got
the hub I just plugged it into one of the root ports and it was
detected and worked fine from the start. Anything plugged into the hub
would also be detected no problems.

I've tried various CF cards, same result. Again, it works fine when
plugged directly to the root USB ports.

I think this has something to do with my messing about today trying to
get a Castlewood Orb Drive working (parallel port version). I
succeeded in doing that, but now I think something I've done has
screwed up the USB hub.

I have tried uninstalling the "Generic USB Hub" from device manager,
then disconnecting and re-connecting the device. The hub is found OK,
but as soon as I plug anything into it WHAM! the PC reboots.

I have tried removing the usbhub.sys file which is apparently the
driver for the Generic USB Hub, in the hope that it will be replaced
(if corrupted) but this made no difference.

I've searched the MS knowledge base, and found an article suggesting
installation of SP4, which I already have. I reinstalled it just in
case but no difference.

I have searched the usenet archives and found a few souls who have had
similar problems but no solutions were offered.

Basically, I guess I want to force it to remove and reinstall the
necessary files in the hope that it will go back to what it was.
Strangely, it did work just one time when I removed and reinstalled
the Generic USB Hub, but after rebooting the problem re-occurred. Have
since re-tried many times without success.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Markko

Is that hub passive or active?

It draws its power from the USB cable so I'm guessing that means it's
passive? (No separate power supply required)

I've been searching more and found something about Roxio EasyCD
Creator causing this problem. I have recently installed this app, but
didn't see any connection between the two. Will uninstall it and see
what happens. Also realised that Win2K is set to reboot on crash
rather than simply provide an error - will change this also, and see
what more info I can get. But I'm betting it's the Roxio thing.

(Also, I just installed drivers for a HP 3330 multifunction
printer.... hoping it's nothing to do with that...)

Markko,
Can you boot having the hub with some device already plugged in?
EZ Creator - does it mean you added a burner recently? The same question
about HP - do you use USB connection for it?

I've now resolved the problem, thanks very much for taking the time to
respond. The burner had been in the PC for ages, what was new that I
had just installed EasyCD Creator, and done a complete install. The
errors were caused by the EasyCD component "Take Two". I uninstalled
EasyCD then reinstalled minus this component (and DirectCD). It now
works fine. EasyCD was definitely the conflict here - have found
references to it at both Microsoft and Roxio.

Had various other minor problems with Win2K SP4, such as the event log
items having no information. Still not sure if I ironed that one out,
just disabled Event Logger service, rebooted, deleted the three *.evt
files, re-enabled Event Logger and went from there. Nothing has showed
up yet in the event logs (i.e. no items at all after one or two
reboots), so will wait and see.

Cheers,
Markko
