Connecting a USB 2.0 device to a USB 1.1 port

The Toshiba laptop is a Portege 2000, about 6 months old,
running XP Professional.

Then you need to buy a USB2 PC Cardbus that fits in the PCMCIA socket.
Belkin do one, and that's what I use on my Toshiba Tecra 9000

But I don't understand why the device intially worked,
and now doesn't. And why doesn't the device work in a
USB 1.1 device?

I can't answer that I'm afraid. I know when I connected my USB2 CDRW it came
up immediately with the message about connecting a USB2 device to a USB1
port.
