Hi Al

I am about to attempt connecting a remote site for the first time
I have SBS 2000 at the main office and Server 2003 a
the remote site. I have the Microsoft White Paper o
deploying router to router VPN's but it's confusing

Which server should I use as the calling server an
which one as the answering server

When I get the servers connected, I should be able t
plug a laptop in at the remote site and it will lo
onto the main server? is that correct

Are there any other settings I should know about o
have to change? Do I have to install any other services on the remote server i.e DHCP, DNS etc etc

Do I have to install a seperate firewall at the remote site? I guess yes so is it best to use a hardware firewall/hub or software firewall, ISA

So many questions???? All help very much appreciated as always

thank

Mar

Setting up router-to-router VPN is not easy. And doing it using domain
controllers gives you an extra set of headaches. Have you looked at the
possibility of using hardware router/firewalls for the job?

How you handle the DNS depends on how you are set up. With a persistent
connection, you can use just one DNS server for the whole network. Or you
can have a DNS server in each site. If you have two, you can make each DNS
server a secondary for the other, so that all names can be resolved by the
local DNS server. I would certainly have separate DHCP servers, as the sites
will need to be in different IP subnets (so that the routing will work).
