I have a brother HL1050 printer which I want to connect to my new computer
but it doesn't have a conventional printer socket. Is it just a matter of
buying a special usb cable?

Most new computers and printers are using USB, a standard
USB cable should work just fine.

If your old printer has only a parallel port, you can buy a Parallel to USB
adapter/cable.

This worked for me with a couple of older printers I have.

google "Parallel to USB"
