Trying to connect XP Pro to '98 via a crossover cable. Both machines given
workgroup MSHOME

The XP 'sees' the 98 intermittently in the workgroup. Sometimes appears,
sometimes doesn't - seems no logic to it. When it DOES appear, trying to
open the 98 gives the error message about 'you do not have permissions...'

The 98 never sees the XP.

I've run the network setup wizard on the XP, which then tells you to run it
on the other machines. It doesn't work on the '98 ('Cannot find hardware')
wihch seems wrong. However, as far as I can work out, I've set up the 98 to
be accessible, shared a couple of folders etc.

I've reinstalled 98 recently, and the XP is a brand new machine. The network
card in the 98 has never given me any problems - until recently used it all
the time for a cable modem. There is no little icon on the RH bottom of the
screen to show network activity on the 98, there is on the XP.

I've also done the following: disabled the internet connection firewall,
turned on NETBIOS (knowledge base 318030), gone through Internet connection
sharing, uninstalled Norton on the 98, added the TCP protocol on the 98.

Tried setting up the 98 to start as 'client for MS networks' as 'MS Family'
etc etc. And basically played around with every setting that looks even
vaguely relavant. Which I don't know whether has helped or not.

Any ideas?? Would very much appreciate it. I'm reasonably OK with PCs but
completely new to networks. This might seem a bit naive, but I would have
thought that what I was trying was the simplest thing you could possibly do,
network wise??? But it's taken several years off my life.

Thanks

Alex

1. make sure no firewall running on xp.
2. could be the master browser issue. try to stop computer browser on xp.
3. enable netbios over tcp/ip on xp.
