Hi,

Is there software that allows viewing a damaged disk through an USB IDE
Adapter?
I plugged a damaged laptop disk at one end of the adapter and the other
end into a good laptop through the USB port. But the disk is not
visible anywhere in the good laptop.

If diognostics are all that is concerned, dont bother with viewing in IE,all
good
disk utilitys are from the mfg, they all run in MS-DOS.Just download the
utility
to a formatted MS-DOS floppy, run the utility, even though the mfg does have
an IE utility for the disk it wont perform 1/2 that the other will.

I want to recover the files, so I need to see them first, I guess.

There's no floppy, no cd-rom, and no PC, there's just a disk...

Optimal performance is not a priority. I just want to make sure I can
recover my files. The Boot record and Partition tables are badly
damaged so all I can do is recover files from another disk.

Viewing a disk, viewing files, and recovering files are all different
animals.
Most of the current HD diagnostics will work fine via USB as long as its the
same HD manufacturer. And will work in XP. MS-Dos is not needed. This
will not recover files, only diagnose the hard disk.
