connecting 2 computers using only an ethernet cable for file and printer without a hub

hi

how can i connect a computer with XP with a computer with windows 2000 togethe
with only an ethernet cable? both computers have ethernet cards

i tried with a friend and when we put things together, the computer shows up in
the network, but we can't accesses the files

If you are connecting the two machines directly with a cable you have to
use a CAT-5 crossover cable. Otherwise, get a hub/switch and connect the
two machines to the hub/switch with a regular CAT-5 cable. The cables look
the same and both connect to your network card. The difference is the
pin-outs on the two cables (i.e. the way they are wired).
