Hi,

I have one computer at my hostel and another one at home. Like many of other
WinXP users, most of the time I work in my hostel computer which most of my
files are stored there. But sometimes I need to use my home computer (also
WinXP) to get my work done by connecting to school. I understand how to use
Remote Desktop function.

My problem is the power supply of my hostel is cut off one or two hours
every month for check-up and maintenance. As the power supply resumes my
hostel computer is able to turn on itself and restart windows. Then windows
prompt for password login for my admin account. However, my hostel internet
requires me to connect through VPN. If windows doesn't login automatically
VPN isn't connected and that means I cannot use the remote desktop function.

I tried the Auto Login feature by editing Windows Registry and it really
seemed to be solution to the above problem. However, I also found that my
password is stored unencrypted in Windows Registry which I consdier as
unsafe. Everyone in hostel, like my roommates and my friends, can get into
the Registry by Regedit to look at my password.

Do you think there's a solution that I can protect my password while keeping
the compupter connected to the internet with VPN? Thanks!

Yes, the autologon is not good solution in your case. What you may do is creating the VPN as a service so that the VPN will run automatically without logon. these links may help,
resource kits ... Instcm.exe: Install Connection Manager Profile; Instsrv.exe: Service Installer; Intfiltr.exe: Interrupt Affinity Tool; Kerbtray.exe: Kerberos Tray ...

VPN Setup You can run rasdial.exe as a service by using instsrv.exe 2. Add rasdial.exe into startup. 3. Create IPSec VPN if you have static IP. ....
