'Connect To' has disappeared

My partner was online downloading a Windows Update when her laptop froze up
(again). She had to disconnect from the power source (battery is not
currently fitted). When she rebooted 'Connect To' had disappeared from the
Start menu. So she cannot reconfigure the missing dialup connection. System
restore does not help.
Advice please. XP Home.

Have you tried creating a new connection via the control panel?? My
computer--Control Panel--Network Connections

Yep, didn't work. Just showed a broadband connection (which she does not
have) and would allow no changes. She has been onto Compaq helpline, and is
now doing a full factory XP restore! Let's hope that fixes the problem.
