Basically don't have a telephone connection point upstairs but there is one
downstairs. It their a way to access this telephone point downstairs
without buying a super long telephone wire with my laptop e.g something
which plugs into the telephone point and transmitts a signal which the
laptop could pickup with another bit of hardware. My laptop is running XP
and a standard built in 56K modem?

Any ideas?

In U.S. you can get " Wireless phone jack system." ( Instantly turn any
outlet into a phone jack for your Phone or modem) . No idea about
availability in U.K.

Almost anything you do will cost more than just having the phone company
come out and install a second jack.

Actually, he could just get some telephone wire and a connector at Radio
Shack
or Sears and add the upstairs box himself!! Shouldn't take more than 10
minutes.
Although, allow a bit more time if you are gonna hide the wire inside the
walls!!

Put a wireless network adapter in the laptop, then decide how you'd
like to access the phone line.

You might put another wireless adapter in the computer with modem,
already connected to the phone line, and use a Proxy, NAT, or ICS
internet connection sharing. Instead you could get a wireless router
with serial port, with an external serial modem attached.

This wireless network adapter solution would seem most preferred,
since the laptop is then mobile about the premises, within range of
course.

I posted about rebate deals at COMPUSA last week and some this week .
However Ive since done more searching - its kind of hard to tell
because various searches come up with ridiculous prices for wireless
gear lots of variablity. I found fairly low prices already at
Newegg.com so you can order cards and routers and access points -
there at fairly low prices with and without rebates.

The only thing I dont know about is how to hook up a 56k modem to a
router. Maybe super easy but Ive only seen cable modem /DSL connects
for them .

D-Link DI-714 has the serial port, dialup support.

I still don't know how this can be cheaper/easier than just getting a phone
jack installed where he wants the computer upstairs.

Often the phone wiring inside the residence is owned by the resident,
can cost a fair amount to get someone else to string wire and hook it
up. The do-it-yourself option is cheaper, but would look like crap if
the wire wasn't in the wall or else be harder, require purchase (or
rental) of extra tools most homeowners don't have (like a wire fish).

Granted, the home/inhabitants might benefit from a phone-line if it's
really that far to get a line, but if it were me I'd still use
wireless even with a line already installed. The router option also
adds an extra layer of security.

At a minimum cost for wireless there are now cheap 802.11b cards that
might cost $50 for both... That "might" be more exepensive than the
cheapest option, but then the laptop is anchored to a wall. Who wants
to be anchored to a wall with a laptop?
