My new computer has Windows Vista, old computer had Win XP. I want to
trnasfer all my data files from the XP machine to the Vista Machine. I konw
about master and slave drives, whne I opened the Vista Machine, it has only
two SATA connectors in the motherboard an one with the 40-pin? connector the
ribbon goes to the DVD-ROM.

My question is: can i connect my IDE drive to the motherboard using the
DVD-ROM ribbon? should I set the XP drive as slave?

Yes, you can use the DVD-ROM IDE ribbon. And you can either set the XP drive
as slave or as cable select, depending on what the DVD drive is set to.

You can also use Vista's Window Easy Transfer wizard to move your files and
settings from the old machine to the new one. Insert the Vista dvd and
choose to transfer files from the splash screen. Save the resulting file to
intermediate storage and then run the WET wizard on the new machine to
complete the transfer.

Dumb Q. What is "cable select"?

The old machine is not good anymore, that is why i need to transfer the data
files to the new one...

Thank you.. I 'll try that.

It allows the drive to run off what position it is located in the cable, so
no messing around with Master/Slave anymore. It should be a jumper position
(CS) on the hard drive, along with Master and Slave.

It is quicker and easier to Copy files to CD using Nero,, or
copy them to Memory stick or External hard drive.
