Hi,

I have a PC and a SMC router connected to DSL modem. The PC is connected to
the SMC router and it has internet. The ipconfig info is:

IP Address: 192.168.1.149
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
default gateway:192.168.2.1

I connected a laptop to the SMC router with wire. After I starts it, it
does not have internet. The PCMCIA network card TCP/IP is set to obtain an
IP address and DNS server address automatically. The card is made by Belkin
and it worked before. (I also tried a new wireless card, it does not have
internet, so it is very unlikely it is the card problem) The ipconfig info
is:

Autoconfiguration IP Address: 169.254.80.230
subnet mask:255.255.0.0
default gateway:

Why did the laptop does not get the IP Address from the router. How can I
fix it?

Thanks a lot.

Well maybe the router is not set to supply a DHCP service which is what the
laptop needs to get auto config details.

Check the router manuals to see if that is the problem... I don't know it
personally so I don't even know if it should have that.

Entering the numbers 192.168.2.1 into Internet Explorer should get you to
the router configuration page but you may need a password and I don't know
what the default is.

You could simply try changing the properties in the laptop's lan connection
setting to IP address 192.168.2.xxx where xxx is not 1 or 149 and the subnet
mask to 255.255.255.0 and the gateway to 192.168.2.1 (also use for DNS
server if it is blank)

It definitely will not work as it is so you have nothing to lose by trying
these changes.

If you can't find the router details on their website or in a book then post
model number and someone will probably be familiar with it.

Check the DHCP scope of the router. Make sure you have a link light on the
router port and on the laptop NIC. If it worked before, this is almost
certainly a general connectivity issue (DHCP leases not available, cable,
auto-negotiate problem, bad port, etc). 169.254 addresses are assigned
automatically by Windows if automatic configuration is set up but no DHCP
server can be contacted.

The link light and 100 light are both on and no blinks. I changed the
laptop NIC card's IP Address as the following and it still does not have
internet.

IP Address: 192.168.2.2 (BTY, the Desktop's IP is 192.168.2.149, not
192.168.1.149)
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
default gateway:192.168.2.1

Use the following DNS Address: 192.168.2.1
Alternative DNS Address:

How could I fix it?

Thanks a lot.

What is the DNS of your ISP? That is what needs to be used on the
router, to hand off to the PC's

Have you got Norton Internet Security on the Laptop or possibly another
firewall application? Should have been the first question really since I
just had a similar issue with Norton despite the fact that it was
"Allegedly" turned off. Also a similar incident with Zone Alarm.

Can you ping the router or anything else?

Start>run and type the three letters CMD in the box and hit enter.

Try typing

ping 192.168.2.1 [enter]

and see if it works, can also try with the 149 address but since the "Ping"
response can be disabled that doesn't really prove anything.

Hi,

I can ping 192.168.2.1 to get response. The laptop does not Norton but has
MS antivirus (beta). Is MS antivirus a firewall? The desktop has it and it
works fine. Another laptop also has it and it works fine.
