Hi i have used Nvidia cards for quite a while, I recently swapped out my
Geforce 3 Ti500 for a connect 9600, formated my comp P4 on a gigabyte mobo
with XP Pro and installed cat 3.9s.
Problem is the computer keeps locking for no apparent reason?
Its not heat as I have run with the side off the case with a fan blowing on
the card, its not my PSU as it is a brand new 350watt HEC unit.
Sometimes in windows doing nothing special it locks requiring a power off,
yet it has run 3d mark 2001 all night, I quite like the card but cannot put
up with this card as is, anyone got any experience of this type of problem
or any suggestions as to trouble shooting it.
I put the Geforce 3 back in and the computer runs fine without even
reformating.
I am at a loss help.

the cat 3.8s onward include a feature called vpu recovery that is notorious
for causing instability. switch it off in display propeties and see how you
get on.

Hi Sleepy, I did get messages that the vpu was recovering some error and was
switching to software rendering or something? so I disabled it, but now when
it goes it swtiches to 16 colours and I still have to restart! sometimes the
card acutally seems to switch off or go to a setting my monitor can`t
display, its weird I am starting to think the cards faulty but I have seen a
lot of post that other people have had problems?? Now I have started
looking.
Could be a faulty card but I can`t believe its an ATI fault after the
glowing reviews for the card.

ditto same hassle here

I just got a 9600pro and had terrible problems with the 3.9s. The card is
now running perfectly with the 3.8s.

Sorry for your problems Mark - I myself had 2 geforce cards before
I got a radeon and although the card is great when it runs the overall
quality of ATI drivers is very poor compared to nvidia.
To give a example the 3.4s had broken OpenGL support for Half-Life
and the 3.5s too until they released a "hotfix"driver or 3.5b.
A more recent driver (3.9 I think) stuffed up OpenGL
for all the All-in-Wonder range. The last driver that was met quietly
i.e had fewest complaints was the 3.7s so I would try that first. You can
try newer
drivers as they come out but have a stable one to go back to if needed ?
