Why has miscrosoft developed MSN Messenger and Windows messenger. Surely
there should only be 1 messenger program.

You are not the only one who's confused!
It seems to be a Microsoft basic principle to make everything as complicated
as possible :-(

A question.....
Did MSN*5* work OK for video AND audio?
( I have given up with audio in *6*)
If so, is there any reason why I shouldn't uninstall *6* and revert to *5*?

By reading messages in this NG it seems that MM5 (and also Windows
Messenger 4.7 if you have XP) worked better with people that can't have an
audio connection with MM6 today.
About reverting to MM5 from MM6 you must be aware of the RTC problem that
Jack mentioned in his messages.

Quotation from Jack (specially workaround #2) :
"there is a known issue in a component called RTC
which MSN Messenger uses for Audio. The issue is that Audio will fail for
users on dial-up that do not have a network card. It is being addressed and
a fix will hopefully be made available to the public shortly.

Ah! I have a network card, but my friend's on dial-up...
If the fix *does appear shortly,( a week or so) that would be the
best/easiest route!
Otherwise I'll go for this option:
If you're eager to get Audio working for your friend before MS issues a fix,
there are 2
workarounds your friend can try:
(For Win'98 dial-up users)

1) Buy a cheap 10/100 PCI network card and install it in your computer.

(My friend's actually, but yes!)

OR
2) Uninstall MSN Messenger v6, DELETE rtcdll.dll, rtcrtp.dll and rtcres.dll
from C:\Windows\System directory. Install MSN Messenger v5 (, copy
RTCDLL.dll and RTCRTP.dll from C:\Windows\System directory into a separate
folder. (MSN Messenger v5 shipped with an older version of RTC components).
Upgrade back to MSN Messenger v6 and copy over the old RTC files into the
C:\Windows\System directory.

MSN Messenger v5 can be installed from
http://g.msn.com/7MEEN_US/EN/NT4/SETUPNT.EXE

NOTE: Even though it says SetupNT.exe, it should still install on any OS if
you have already installed MSN Messenger in the past."

Grateful thanks for your most constructive help.
My best regards,
