my computer is relatievly new 2 ghz processor and 256 mb ram and its gone
slow as i cant describe it i dont know if its a virus ive checked it almost
every day for viruses but the progrramme says there is none... my task
manager has abput 4 sometimes 6 svchost.exe running and that is what i
wondered why so many svchost.exe and what is that process anyway... is that
the possible reason why its slow...

First of all, 256 meg is a relatively small amount of ram for
Windows XP. Upgrading to 512 meg might help tremendously.
You should uninstall all unnecessary programs. There may be
many things running in the background. delete the junk from
your hard drive, empty the recyclin bin, then defragment
the hard drive. Make sure to defragment the hard drive at
least once a month.

i surely did those things thanx except the 512 meg is that more expensive on
laptops

You could try using a registry cleaning utility. Backup the registry first
before using one.

Oh, a laptop! Check your power management settings. Also check
you antivirus settings. If they are not set properly, the AV software
might be a resource hog. Some people also like the idea of setting
a minimum size for the swap file. Also go to control panel, system,
advanced, performance, and make sure that adjust for best
performance is selected.

Have you checked for spyware?

2 good Freeware spyware checkers:

I was going to say check for spyware too but JS beat me to it.
On svchost.exe - its normal to have half a dozen of these running
so don't touch them but you could look out for stuff that you've
installed on your PC and that adds to background tasks. e.g When
you install a soundcard it may add programs like CThelper.exe
which is a waste of space. MSOffice adds findfast.exe which
slows your system. Next time you reinstall the OS and before you
install any programs or drivers use CTRL-ALT-DELETE to bring
up Task Manager to see what's running in the background and write
down the list - you can now see what each program/driver install
adds to the list of background stuff and see if you need it.

svchost.exe manages groups of services. You might have a dozen services
running, and 4 or 5 instances of svchost.exe running. This is perfectly
normal as windows 2000/XP have a lot of key services that the operating
system needs.

256MB is a little light on for a 2Ghz system.. try upping it to at least
512MB.. also how fast is the hard drive you have in your machine ? (5400RPM
or 7200RPM.. it makes a big difference in speed when it comes to loading
stuff..)

One more thing is to check what programs load at startup.. (both startup
folder in the start menu, and in the registry..)

Chris

That's a lot of stuff! Try the following links to find out what that stuff
is.

http://www.sysinfo.org/startupinfo.html
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

You may want to stop loading some of that stuff, but don't stop loading
something unless you are absolutely sure it's ok not to load it.

Download 'ProcessExplorer' and 'Autoruns' from www.sysinternals.com to help
manage your startup programs and background tasks. Try here for the
downloads:

P.S.

Did check for spyware?
