OS: Win98SE
Ram: 64MB
HDD: 20GB
CPU: PentII

This PC had a problem restarting itself after sertain
amount of time (roughly 5min). I run virus scan and
detected one and deleted it (I don't remember the name).
Even after that it had the same problem, seems like the
restart time was getting shorter, now matter what
application or program you run.
I complitelly formatted the hard drive and tried to
install win2000, but during the hardware detect (mouse,
keyboard...e.c) it keeps restarting itself and starts
detecting them again. Didn't work with WinXP too.
What might cause this problem?
I replaced the hard drive, still the same problem...

You'll want to check the HCL and check the pc, mb, or bios manufacturer's
web site for an updated bios (if required) and or the hardware
manufacturer's web site for Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/upgrading/compat/default.asp

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

your computer sounds like it is having a hardware problem.

1) overheating.
check to see if the power supply & cooling cpu fans are
spinning.
your bois program should have some sort of cpu temp
monitoring page. start it up and watch the temp for 5
minutes and see if it climbs or not.

2) ram.
if you got more than 1 simm, try running the computer on
one simm at a time and see if it still resets.

3) power supply
it may not be delivering the 5v & 12V within the tolerance
range of your motherboard. get someome with a multimeter to
check.

potentially any bit of hardware can be causing the reset.
