confused now

I'm having a stupid problem with Windows Messenger that I can't
resolve. I can't sign in with my e-mail/password (passport) and when
I try to retrieve it from the MSN site, I get one of those funky "This
site is not available" pages. However, my e-mail address is correct..
I know this because I am able to log in from other places. I finished
the recovery of the XP OS and followed all the correct procedures.
Initially, MSN was working fine but this morning it's not and I have
no idea what the problem is.

Here are some suggestions you might want to check/try:

1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
2. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the
Delete Cookies button.
3. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.
4. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK

Then try again.

Thanks. Somehow Windows Messenger 4.7 got uninstalled (blessing in
disguise) so I downloaded MSN Messenger and it works fine.
 
Yes. So I downloaded Windows Messenger (I think I need it for some reason
although I won't use it for chatting) but it won't install. It gets to the
start up screen... I give it the go ahead and it goes away and never comes
back. I'm not scared to edit my registry if someone can tell me what reg
entries might be hanging around that is preventing a clean install.
