Opening AntiSpyware prompts a screen "BACKUP DELL - INSTALLED PROGRAMS" - The
feature you are trying to use is on CD ROM, Insert your backup Dell Installed
Programs. It offers a drop down to search for my CD ROM Drive.

Also, cannot connect to internet for updates. I have allowed AntiSpyware
permisson from within my Firewall, but it says it still can't connect.

Any help appreciated,
Tim

As per this post:
"Tom,
Yes I did read and try Bill Sanderson's suggestion this evening. I elected
to download the Windows Installer Clean-up Program. I deleted the Back:up
Dell-Instaled Programs from the program data base. It worked. I can now open
the MSAS clean. Thanks for your help. I will answer Bill Sanderson also.
Bill Welch "

I too downloaded the Windows Installer Clean-Up Program" and ran it... there
were no chances or options to search for anything. The program ran, said it
was finished and I still have the problem.

Any other ideas?
Thanks
Tim

Well, now I'm really confused. I ran the program listed below and it offered
me no options, performed it's duites and closed. I also went to ADD | REMOVE
programs and selected to uninstall 'Backup Dell Installed Programs', which I
assume it did but now the Microsoft AntiSpyware program seems to be gone.
I hope I didn't need the Dell Program.
Tim

If you really need the Dell program, you probably have a CD which came with
your system. Otherwise, I believe their tech support will supply it when
needed, at no charge.

It sounds to me as though you installed the cleanup tool, but didn't go to
Start, all programs, and run it.

I'd suggest reinstalling Microsoft Antispyware at this point, if you are
still interested in the protection it provides.

Thanks for your advice, I did download and reinstall the spyware program,
but oddly now the program icon will not show up in the task tray as it did
before. I found the setting to disable it from appearing, but it is already
unchecked.
It's really a shame you have to run all these things, my Dell computer used
to be fast, but with Anti-Spyware, Firewall and Anti-Virus running, it eats
up 2/3 of the RAM. I guess I need to step up to 1GB of RDRAM.
Tim

I have Microsoft Antispyware and Windows OneCare Live (antivirus+) running on
machines with 350 Mhz processors and 384 megs of ram, with acceptable
performance, according to the users, and my own administrative use of the
machines.

The missing tray icon happens to a good many folks, and may be due to an XP
bug, rather than a Microsoft Antispyware issue. For some, logging off and
back on again fixes it. You can also try Start, control panel, add or remove
programs, Microsoft Antispyware, change, update.

Thanks Bill. I'm running a 1.8Ghz processor with 512MB of RDRAM and I get
tired of waiting on programs to open. I clean and maintain my system
regularly with scankisk, defrag, regcleaner, delete all useless, old and
backup files, caches etc. I've never reformatted a Windows XP machine so I
was reluctant to try. I also heard I'd have to relicense with MS if I did,
and my system is out of warranty, 3 years old and I don't want to pay big
bucks for tech support if I mess up. I'm sure that would make my machine
faster, I just regret the chore of getting everything back the way it has
taken me 3 years to get it. ;-)
Tim

You shouldn't need to reformat to get performance back. Your license remains
valid--you paid your money and got genuine goods. You would need to go
through activation and genuine validation again, but both should be automatic
via the 'net, and neither should be a problem.

The big bucks for tech support can be an issue--but keep reading the
newsgroups.

I find that some of the big name antivirus apps are among the more
significant resource hogs on systems I work with.
