Conflicts between Win XP HE and Works 7?

I recently had problems with my copy of Win XP Home Edition and used
the CD to fix the problems without doing a full re-install. (The
cursors appeared to have been deleted - np doubt by my adding an
icon-changer piece of software that I then removed) There is no other
software running on it (I removed all the software using remove
programmes), and when I did a virus scan it came up with nothing. But
then when I reloaded Works 7 onto the machine it said that it couldn't
launch it because there was a missing GUI file of some sort in a dll
somewhere. This seems somewhat bizzare because it was running fine
when it came pre-installed on my machine! Do I need to do a full
reinstall of WinXP to fix whatever the problem is - or is this a
common problem?

Hi, Rowan.

See Microsoft's instructions for an "in-place upgrade":
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

Note that this is not intended as a timesaver; it will take about as long as
a clean install of WinXP, and you will need to go to Windows Update as soon
as you get your firewall and antivirus back in place, so plan on half a day.
But it should preserve all your installed applications and data and most of
your tweaks. Since you say, "There is no other software running on it", you
might as well do a clean install, including a reformat of your HD.

But this might be academic in your case, depending on how your computer
manufacturer configured your copy of WinXP when pre-installing it, and on
whether you got a full WinXP CD-ROM with your computer or only an
OEM-prepared Recovery Disk.

If you tell us the make and model of your computer, someone here may
recognize it and give you more specific advice.
