Big John

I'm running an HP Photosmart C4150 printer on my HP Pavilion Laptop
with Vista (64bit).I downloaded a new driver when I got the laptop and
it seem to be running OK until the last few days (I have since gotten a
new CD from HP with a driver that supports Vista.

Problem: when I am working in Excel (2007) when I attempt to do certain
things (like change the color of text) Excel will shut down
unexpectedly. A "problem Signature" is provided and the "fault module is
hpz3r4v2.dll" which apparently is my HP Printer.

I have tried to reload the printer driver from the a new CD which I got
from HP but it will not reload - when I try to reload all the options
are greyed out and I can't get it to do anything!

I'm at a complete loss! any ideas - or can I provide more info??

Thanks--

Big John

Are you sure the drivers you got from HP are for Vista 64 bit? To my
knowledge, 32 bit drivers will not work with 64 bit OSs.

Can you indicate what processes cause Excel to close down, besides the
one you mentioned? Is it when you are changing formatting features, or
when you go to print the document?

All I can say is that when I complained to HP that my printer was not
working after purchasing a new HP computer with Vista on it, they sent
me a CD that says "080.001.225.000 Microsoft Windows Vista-All supported
Windows Operating Systems". It works for everything else as far as I can
tell, so I am assuming its a 64bit driver.

Printer drivers should contain a digital signature that indicates it has
been approved by MS for use with a certain OS. If HP did not run the
drivers through MS for their digital signature, there may be a problem
with some programs.

I will attempt to get a better analysis from MS printing div, as to the
possible cause of this issue. It may take a few days.

I do need clarification on something.

You indicated below that when you first got your Vista 64 OS on your
laptop that "It appeared to be running OK until the last few days" after
you downloaded a HP driver.

Do you ever try Excel when you were running that "OK" driver, and if so
did it have any problems?

If I'm understanding correctly, things were OK with the computer/printer
connection until you upgraded the printer driver software via a CD that
HP sent you which you installed, at which point the problems started
with Excel. Am I understanding that correctly?

Have you tried (if you still have access to it) to put the older driver
back on, or is that too complex?

I'm only suggesting that as a temporary fix, and also it may help to
trouble shoot the newer driver.

I just reread your earlier posting, in which you indicate you cannot
reload the older driver due to it being grayed out.

You may need to uninstall the later driver first before trying to
reinstall the earlier one to allow it to work.

I am bringing this to MS's attention for some feedback.

Since I am on the road, I have hesitated to uninstall the driver until I
get home. The only place it's causing a problem is with Excel as
mentioned originally, and I can work around that for a while.

Meanwhile, I'm going to complicate matters!! It just happens that I have
another HP driver on the machine for another HP Printer (HP C4180)that
I use at an alternate location. It will not drive the printer I'm having
problems with, but after switching to it and trying it, I switched back
to the problem printer (an HP C4150) and the problem appears to be gone!
The new CD I got from HP is for the "4100 Series" so it should work on
both machines. Would Vista be able to recognize the difference between
the two printers? I suppose so, but it all seems to be a moot question now.

FWIW, while fooling around last night I discovered that this identical
problem has been identified by other users. See:

Thank you for the update. I glad (for your sake) that the printer now
appears to be working, now that your activated another driver (I believe
I understand that correctly). Of course, for the people I am sending
this to for analysis, your new info probably adds a new layer into the
troubleshooting, but so be it.

None the less, I appreciate the additional info, and the posting of a
similar problem by someone else. Maybe someone will get to the bottom
of this yet.

Hi Big John,

I just recently received some information from the MS Printing team, and
they indicated this (or a similar problem) was resolved with Vista SP 1.

Have you installed Vista SP 1 on your system(s)?

Apparently , this (or a similar) problem was reported some time back,
and it's cause is likely within the HP driver which may have been
supplied as an inbox driver with Vista. Although inbox drivers are
tested by MS, they are written by the peripheral manufacturers, who are
supposed to do the thorough testing before submission.

If you get some more details or specifics please let me know and I will
pass it on to the printing team at MS.
