I'm on XP Home SP1 using Outlook Express 6.0. I recently
downloaded and installed MSNMessenger 6.0.
The problem is that everytime I open Outlook Express it
signs me out of messenger 6.0 and into the old version of
messenger (which is built in XP). Is there any way of
getting around this?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings Nol,

The only way around this is to stop Outlook Express from loading the old (Windows) Messenger.
To do so, close Outlook Express, then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

After this is run/imported, you can then open Outlook Express and Windows Messenger will no
longer load.

Jonathan this is great, but then MSN Messenger 6.0 will
open automatically whether you have it checked not to
open when windows signs on or checked not to open when
connected to the internet. It opens anyway. How do you
stop that. I really would like to have control of when
MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger connects.

Hi Judi,

If you open up Windows Messenger, click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab,
uncheck 'Run this program when Windows starts' and in MSN Messenger 6, click the Tools menu,
then Options, then General tab, uncheck 'Automatically run Messenger when I log on to
Windows' as well as 'Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet', should stop
this from occurring -- unless another application specifically calls on Messenger.

If you're still having a problem, do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with
Messenger and cause it to run anyway. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the
Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open
Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger
and click OK.

Oh Jonathan Thank You... This has been driving me crazy
for to long... I have Norton 2003 - and that must be
it..since I have done everything else - including
uninstalling windows messenger, installing msn messenger
then uninstalling msn messenger and now installing
windows messenger 4.7 again.

Which leads me to one more question... I read in another
post about running a download to change the .reg to stop
it from automatically running in OE, but I neglected to
read the part that said "after installing MSN Messenger"
which I didnt do. How can I correct that - or is it
necessary. My ultimate goal is it stop it from
automatically signing in EVER!

Thanks
