Confirmation of Download Integrity

Some download sites don't even state what the exact byte size of their
download should be (MB or KB isn't sufficient). How can one be
assured of a fully valid and complete download especially when it
needs to be installed over an existing older version of a program that
is currently being relied on?

If you do not trust the site then do not download anything.

It's not trust of the web site that concerns me. It's the
integrity of the download process itself that I'm unsure of.

I've had some downloads that weren't complete under IE-5.5 and there
was no indication that they were incomplete until after I executed
them. Then, I got some vague message saying something about it not
being a proper Windows file. Turns out that IE-5.5 had a problem with
FTP downloads.

Will a faulty download always fail to execute? Is there some sort of
automated checksum made or something done to check its integrity
before it continues to execute its intended function?

A well designed program will do that.
If you download anything then these programs may not check it and you will
get some other error message(s).
