Configuring Outlook 2003 to NOT automatically check for mail.

The subject says it all. I had Outlook 2000 configured to
NOT check for email unless the program was open and active.

After installing Outlook 2003, it checks for mail
regardless of whether or not the program is open. I have
deactivated the two options under send/receive options
when offline, but that does not stop the program from
checking. I have gone to startup options in msconfig, but
cannot find any obvious file that would be the culprit.

Thanks in advance,

John Carson

Offline doesn't mean not open. It means not connected to the mail server.
Try turning off all the automatic send options, both online and offline.

What kind of mail server(s)?

Hi Sue

I use Outlook 2003. I use the automatic send/receive when outlook is open, but I close Outlook at night and I dont want it to send/receive. How can I stop it from send/receive only when Outlook is closed? thank you

If you shut down Outlook, it will not check for mail at all. Perhaps the
real issue here is some application hooked into Outlook that's holding it
open enough that send/receive continues to occur. Look for PDA sync, fax,
anti-virus tools.

thanks for your prompt reply. I am glad to hear that when Outlook is closed, that it does not check for email. So I will investigate the other suggestions you made. I do have a PDA - Compac w/ActiveSync, and am using Symantec corporate anti-virus. I tend to think the PDA is more likely a culprit. I will look into those items
thanks again, Steve
