I can't figure out how to configure the indexing service to only index a
certain directory.

Windows Help brings up a description of configuring indexing in Windows
_2000_, which reads in part as follows:
Create a New Catalog
To create a new catalog: ....
Right-click Indexing Service, point to New,
and then click Catalog. In the Name box,
type a name for your new catalog.

But in _XP_, right-clicking indexing does not bring up a 'catalog' menu
item.

How can I configure indexing so that it only indexes a particular
portion of the directory tree?

I'll reply to myself, in case anyone else is having this problem.

Here are two URLs that helped:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/indexsrv/html/ixabout_1605.asp
http://www.asp101.com/articles/john/indexserver/default.asp

The latter is directed at setting up a web site search, but the info
on how to get the indexer working right was helpful.

FWIW, the MsWindows built-in "Search" tool (which can be called from
Ms Explorer--not to be cornfused with IE) uses the index. Many other
programs do not, including PowerDesk's "File Finder" and Outlook
Express.
