How to configure my (client, not server) windows 2000 SP4 computer to
use some DNS name servers for hostname lookup?
i.e. something similar to the /etc/resolv.conf file on unix.
The option available at
Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection >
Properties > TCP/IP
has "General" only.

Hello (e-mail address removed),

Check out c:\winnt\drivers\etc\hosts file. The file has no extension, open
it with notepad and you can edit it if it is the one you use.

Best regards

I had put the following three lines in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
\hosts and C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\resolv.conf in my win 2000
client (not server) computer.
search powah.com
nameserver 172.20.10.20
nameserver 172.16.2.14

However, it still does not work (the hostname "tulip" does not resolve
to a proper IP addresses).
C:\>ping tulip
Unknown host tulip.

C:\>ping tulip.powah.com

Do you mean your internal computers, when you say hosts, or internet sites?

If you mean internal computers, you have three options:

1. Set up a WINS server.

2. Create HOSTS files on each computer, each listing every other computer.

3. Run an internal DNS server.

resolv.conf is linux native, windows doesn't recognise it. In any case it is
functionally equivalent to the DNS tab on your LAN TCP/IP properties.

3. is the best option though involves a fair bit of understanding. You need
DNS server software. Windows server has this, or you can use MaraDNS. You
need to create a zone file listing your internal computers as A-records, set
your DNS server as the default on each computer, and register the correct
domain suffix. Oh, and the DNS server itself must have a PTR record in the
zone file.
