i have a config problem windows won't start up at all. i
am nervous to put any cd in because i dont want to erase
the hard drive. HELP!

if you put the windows cd you should be pretty safe if
you plan on a reinstall you will get an option to save
old files on desktop etc altho once installed you would
have to go into safe mode and recover the files by
retaking ownership of them

XP REPAIR
.............................................................................

Boot from the CD or you can insert the CD while at the windows desktop but
when the setup screen appears, exit setup and reboot. If your system is set
to be able to boot from the CD, it should detect the disk and give a brief
message, during the boot up, if you wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

Is your Windows XP CD a "system recovery" disk or is it a full
installation CD for Windows XP? If it is a "system recovery" disk
then you are probably right in being nervous as these disks most often
will only do a reformat of the hard drive, wiping out everything on
it, and then install a fresh copy of Windows just as it was when it
left the factory.

Have you tried different startup options for your Windows XP?

Turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon
as the first information of any kind shows on the screen. Keep
tapping until the Windows Startup Menu appears.

Try choosing "Last known good configuration" from the menu and see
what happens.

If that fails repeat the procedure and this time choose "Safe Mode"
from the startup menu.

Post the results back here. Also please include a bit more
information about your computer, including the make and model, and
also about the original problem including the details of just what
happens when you try to start up Windows XP. The full text of any and
all error message should be included in your response.

Good luck
