Hi Guys,
First off, I'd like to wish users of this NG a very merry Christmas.
I'm hoping to use part of the holiday trying to iron out some WinXP
quirks.
I spent 7 years getting familiar with Win'95, until, just when I was
beginning to feel a comfortable illusion of control, the support rug was
pulled out and I was induced to "progress" to WinXP.

I know WinXP is much cleverer than Win 95, because with 95 I used to access
the internet all on my lonesome and now with XP I surf with a bevy of WinXP
services in attendance. How cool is that?

OK, so I've tried the tricks I could find with Google on how to *keep* the
renamed desktop icons, all to no avail.
Even the cute VB script with the Swiss army knife icon only cuts it until
the next reboot.
Being unable to keep desktop icon name changes is a real confidence shaker.
I need at least the illusion of superficial control before I can entrust my
business interests to this OS. It's one of my few Sanity Clauses.

As all the remedies I've tried so far fail, is there a way to have a script
change the registry automatically after each reboot, so I can have the
desktop icons named as required?

TIA

I didn't catch the start of this thread but if you're
concerned about
desktop icons reverting to their default icon names, then
the culprit
isn't Windows but rather the newer nVidia drivers you've
installed.
If you disable the nVidia Display Driver Service*, they
will not
revert to their default names anymore and there doesn't
appear to be
any detrimental effect.

*(Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services > disable)

Thanks! It's reassuring to know that despite the rigours imposed by
computer use, I'm still capable of being completely wrong about the source
of problems.

I'll try it. Thanks again.
