I am having a problem with the above modem in a Compaq
Prosario 2100 notebook computer that I am desperatly
seeking help with. The computer is based in an area code
404. While I am in the 404 area code the modem works fine.
When I take the computer to any area code other than the
404 area code, it sends a bastardized data steam that the
local telephone exchange can not interperet and I get a
canned recording saying the number is invalid in this area
code. I have tried changing dial properties, and not using
dial properties, all to no avail. I can not accept that I
am the only one to encounter this problem. If anyone has
any insight into this I would appreciate hearing from you.

First I would check that I typed the correct phone number. Does the new
area code location require 10 digit dialing? Is the new area code location
long distance requiring a 1+areacode+number?

Then I would ask this question on a moden newsgroup as it appears to not
have much to do with networking.

Also, back in the days when I was using dialup and an Earthlink account. I
would often travel and encountered a problem dialing in. The problem was
that from other than my home location I could not connect to Earthlink.
Eartlink techs said it had something to do with local authorization and the
set something that allowed me to connect and authorize from any location.
Maybe this is unrelated to your problem, but hopefully it provides another
trouble shooting datapoint.
