Computers not displayed in "Computers Near Me" workgroup

Dear all,

I'm using Windows 2000 SP4 for most of the computers in my work group. From
time to time, other computers on the network that I know are turned on,
cannot be found when I open the "Computers Near Me" Window. However, I can
ping these invisible computers and find them when I go to "search for
computers". The other computers in the "Computers Near Me" window also take
a long time to load or get refreshed. After several days, these symptoms
disappear and I can see all the computers in the work group again.

I strongly suspect that this is caused by a virus. Does anyone else think
so? Would this virus be on the "invisible" computer, the local computer, or
can it be on any computer in the work group?

Or perhaps the cause is something else. If so, how would I be able to fix
this?

I would suspect a master browser issue as opposed to a virus, especially if
the disruptions happen when firing up or shutting down PCs, or when
connecting or disconnecting PCs from the network. You'll find details here:
