I have a laptop with a direct connection to my cable Intnernet router
through the laptop's onboard 100mbs Ethernet port. For my LAN connection I
have a 10mbs PC card. On the other end of the LAN is the onboard Etnernet
connector. It recognizes the 10 mbs speed of the laptop's output.
In the home network wizard, I have set the laptop to direct connection to
the Intenet that is shared with other computers, no firewall. I have set the
desktop to "this computer connects to the Internet through another computer
on the network" and no firewall.
An IPCONFIG on the laptop yields two 192.168.x.x addresses, one of them
identified with the name of my Internet service provider. An IPCONFIG on the
desktop yields a 169.254.x.x address.
All conections are set to get IP addresses from DHCP server.
Both computers can see the shared files on the other and the shared printer.
But the desktop will not connect to the Internet.
Finally, the desktop is a dual boot system, and when I boot it in WindowsME,
it will connect to the Internet through the laptop's Internet connection.
I feel like there is one small setting somewhere keeping the desktop from
connecting to the laptop's Internet connection, but I certainly can't figure
out what it may be.
