When starting PC, it says 'system shut down unexpectedly'
etc, and choice of things to do. problem is, when i choose
something, nothing happens, the system freezes, and i
reboot, and same thing happens all over again. I bought my
PC with XP preloaded, so don't have any system disks. Is
there anything i can do? What happened? I know i may have
to restore to factory settings, but would prefer not to,
as will lose info not backed up (that will teach me). Is
there any way of getting in to save a few files b4
restoring?

Hi,

Download the setup disks for your version of WinXP, then boot the system
with them. Run "chkdsk C: /r" from the command prompt.

Home edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33290

Professional edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291

The file you download from these links will create a 6 disk floppy set when
run. It is best to format all 6 disks before you run the file. They will get
you a minimal version of the Recovery Console, and should allow the disk
checker to run.

In addition, I would check with the system manufacturer for the availability
of a generic install disk. It will likely cost a few $'s, but is much easier
to use for working on the system from the Recovery Console than are the boot
disks (which only provide minimal recovery function).

Thanks for this, i'll try it. I may be being thick, but
why can't it be downloaded onto a CD rather than 6
diskettes?

The setup file won't create a CD.

Can't you just take out the hard-disk drive, put it into another computer that works, boot from that one and save your files?...Just a thought...
