Computer won't shut down.

I recently downloaded the Service Pack 2 update and now my computer won't
shut down or switch users. I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP, but when it
gets to the point where the computer restarts it stops...does nothing.

Please, please help me figure out how to shut down my computer from the
start menu again.
