Hello! I'm having a problem with my system--basically, the restart function
does not work. It sucessfully shuts down windows but then it doesn't reboot
itself. It just kind of hangs at a black screen. The system is a 2.6 PIV
with 1 gig of ram and a 9700 PRO. The problem started a few weeks ago and I
can't trace it to any changes I made on the system. In order to restart the
system, I have to let it get to that black screen that then hold the power
button down until it powers off, and then fire it back up. Or, I can just
shut it down completely. This is problematic because most software requires
a reboot after installation and it has become a major hassle. Firmware is
update, catalyst 3.9 is installed--pretty much everything is up to date.

Any suggestions?

Try doing a repair install of XP.

I do not know if this sheds any light but here is my nightmare with the 9600
Pro. I purchased the card and everything was fine for 2 the first two weeks
with the
exception of flickering in FS 2004. I was told that Catalyst 3.9 solved the
problem (it did) however as soon as I upgraded to the Catalyst to 3.9 major
problems started with restarts and shutdowns. Last Friday ATI tech support
told
me that the card is most likely defective so I exchanged it with a new one
but no joy! Spend the whole weekend doing a repair install, reinstalling all
drivers etc but the problems never went away. This morning I spend a couple
of hours on the phone with ATI tech support and then Asus and no one was
able to pinpoint the problem. We checked EVERYTHING The ATI tech support
was very nice but baffled at this and told me that they will only look at
this further if there are many complaints .... I was lucky that I still had
2 weeks to return the card so I did and I am thinking of getting the
Nvidia5700 but I am gun shy at this point!
I posted my problems here and everyone from this newsgroup has been very
helpful.
Hopefully you are able to solve the problem.

make sure your acpiu drivers are installed correctly in xp and check in your
bios settings to make sure it is enabled.
acpi is the power management features built into the computer's hardware and
the software initializes them to make them work
