I have a problem when first pressing the power button on the tower. The
computer will start up(all the lights come on and the fans start turning) but
then it just won't begin the boot process, the monitor screen stays black. if
i keep pressing the reset button, eventually the computer will start working
correctly

i've had an engineer out to it who took it away to carry out hardware tests,
but could find nothing wrong , he then re-installed windows xp and said
that it's my monitor thats the problem as it works fine on his...i then
purchased a brand new monitor but still it will not boot up unless i keep
pressing the reset button

does anyone know how to solve this problem?

could it be a bios fault?

thanks in advance for any help

That's a pretty classic case of a failing power supply. What usually
happens is that the psu doesn't have enough "juice" to get the hard
drive completely up and spinning but there is enough momentum on the
drive to get it going after subsequent starts.

I can't comment on what your tech found since I don't know what s/he
did. However, it certainly doesn't sound like a software problem so I'm
not sure what reinstalling Windows was supposed to solve. You've proved
the issue isn't with your monitor, now try a different psu. Or if you
are uncomfortable working with hardware, a different tech.

Good luck,

Malke

Is there a way of testing the PSU to see if it is failing? My computer is
doing a similar thing to where it takes several resets to get it to power up
then it works fine.
Thanks!

hey guys ... i'm having a similar problem, sans the reset button (but only
because i'm not sure if that is a button other than the regular on/off
button).

i even tried a couple of different monitors - which work great on a
different computer, but on the problem computer, goes immediately to
"powersave."

I also noticed that the problem computer doesn't go through the boot cycle
that it should - so i was unable to use (or even open) system recovery disks.
Does this sound like the same issue? ... a psu issue?

Thank you - and Paul, i hope you don't mind me hitchhiking on your issue.
