Computer won't boot after adding memory

Hello,

I got an Acer Power F1 (xp pro) recently and added a decent sound
card, video card and wireless network card with no problems. That was
about a week or two ago.

Yesterday, though, I clipped in a 256MB (PC3200 400MHZ) memory module
into the spare memory slot (to give 512MB in all) and now the computer
won't boot. When I power on the onboard speaker gives out a constant
tone for around seven seconds followed by 3 seconds of silence then
another 7 second tone and silence ad infinitum. This happens even
after I remove the new memory. Now I get the same problem whether I
use the new and existing memory together or separately or swap the
slots or reseat everything or even with both slots empty.

Would the computer make that sort of noise with a memory fault? Is it
possible that I've cooked both modules because the new one might not
have been seated correctly? If for whatever reason the modules are not
compatible, would it not simply be a case of removing the new memory
and rebooting? Nothing appears on screen at all.

Any advice much appreciated.

TIA

Jim.

You didnt have it plugged in when you inserted the modules did you?
Theres a little power in the system even when you have it turned off
unless you turn it off at the power supply or plug it out. YOu can
tell cause theres usually a light on the motherboard that goes out
when all the power is off.

If you didnt do that and you didnt zap it with static electricity or
seat it weird -- then the odds of messing it up are small. Are you
sure you are seating it properly? One time I could have sworn they
were seated in their pefectly but when my PC wouldnt work right I saw
that it wasnt all the way down.

Recently I had to clean my contacts on another PC too , the mem
modules then it started working.
